When the makers of this plugin removed the old job system and moved to the new version of the plugin and everything broke your old backups, they automatically enabled backups getting uploaded to your server in .tar format. These are in the /wp-content/uploads/backwpup/xxxxxxx/backups folder and are set to run every month.

We've NEVER had backups set to upload to our own server, let alone into folders of the actual website. We discovered over 100GB of backup files across a lot of different sites.

This plugin maker is reckless.

I’ve used this plugin for years in 50+ client projects. Unfortunately, since the revamp (v5) in February 2025 it has turned into a usability nightmare.

The intentions behind the changes were probably good… maybe to make the tool more accessible for non-technical users? But the execution is a disaster. The developers opted for many non-standard interaction patterns—likely to give the tool a more ‘app-like’ feel. The result is that it now feels like an unpredictable alien element within the WordPress installation.

I held back this review for half a year and really tried to stick with BackWPup. But in the end, it has become so cumbersome for me that I’m switching to another solution.

This is one of those plugins you don't think you need until it saves your site. I had a bad plugin update that broke my admin area. Thanks to the backup tool, I restored everything in under 5 minutes. Later, I migrated to a new host again smooth restore, no downtime. Brilliant!

We struggled restoring 3 of our company websites and when I reached out to support, the time they had to work with me over 2 weeks of restoring and making sure we were back to running normal was just excellent. When I ended having to change my hosting plan again, they had the time to assist and that to me was exceptional support. I recommend the use of the app.

I've used BackWPup to restore my site before after bad crashes, and while this time it didn't work (due to BlueHost imposing a 20GB storage cap which truncated an archive) their support was more than willing to help me out. When I found the source of the corrupted archive, they took my concern seriously and told me they intend to look into ways to warn users about this issue should it occur again. I'll definitely keep using BackWPup as long as I'm rolling WordPress for my site!

At first, the plugin wasn't working. Support then took a closer look at my multisite installation. We were able to determine that the problem wasn't with the plugin, but rather a bug in the multisite installation. After reinstalling the installation, everything worked perfectly.

Ein unbedingt notwendiges Plugin, dass problemlos funktioniert. Wer jetzt noch meint, er bräuchte keine Sicherungskopien oder meint, Backups wären zu kompliziert, soll sich nicht wundern, wenn ihm gesagt wird: "Keine Backups, kein Mitleid!"

Long time ago I gave this Plug a 5 star rating. I used the Pro Version on dozens of sites.

The "quality" of the software after the last update is so bad that I am urged to revoke my earlier rating.

The new interface is - horrible. OK, matter of taste.

Support requests (Pro version) take ages. Online documention only up to date in English version.

This was my first time trying the backup plugin. I found it very useful for backing up a site with a size limit. I needed a plugin that allowed me to split the backup into two or more parts and that included a tool for restoring the site to another domain with automatic URL replacement. It's truly excellent and powerful.

After the update, BackWPup stopped working. After consulting the hotline, I uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin. After that, BackWPup worked again. It was all very annoying and time-consuming. Now that the initial frustration has passed, I'm glad BackWPup is working again, as it is a useful plugin.
